First Fruit

So, a few days ago I took this photo, and did a bunch of web searches asking, "how do you know when quince is ripe?" and similar questions. Because both our quinces had gotten so large they'd bent their branches over and I was guessing it was about time for harvest.

Quince on the tree

It turns out to be more art than science. You know quince is ripe when it looks and smells ripe. It gets this apple-y sort of scent to it, and it turns a nice yellow. You can also just wait for them to fall from the tree.

Quince on the rail

Today I sniffed both fruits, feeling a trifle foolish. As I was sniffing the one in the back, it fell off in my hand. I guess that means it's ripe.
